Closet Case

Sasha Lazard

Her debut album mixes classical arias with dance beats. Her wardrobefull of family heirlooms and funky madefor-her frocks-is just as eclectic.

CUSTOM MAIDEN
My mother and grandmother werecouture customers, so maybe my taste for custom clothes is genetic. I like to have Elisa Jimenez sew dresses directly onto my body, like the floor-length, slinky, see-through gown that she made for my recordrelease party.

SIMPLY RED
My album is called The Myth of Red, so I wear a lot of red onstage. It works out well, because deep rose is my favorite color. I have red shoes, red bags, red everything, but the best is the huge heart-shaped ruby ring that the jeweler Billy Van Bakker is making for me. The stone was given to me as a good-luck charm by a friend before a performance, so it's really special to me.

FAMILY VALUE
Some of my favorite things are hand-me-downs. My mother gave me some wonderful Yves Saint Laurent couture from the seventies that suits my bohemian style. My grandmother and great-grand mother left me a collection of antique silk scarves. The best one is inscribed, TO MADAME CLAUDE LAZARD FROM CHRISTIAN DIOR. I wear them in my hair, like hippie bandannas.

TOTAL BABE
My latest obsession is an iridescent floral caftan that used to belong to Babe Paley. It was given to me by a friend of hers who lives near my summer house in Maine. I'm still searching for the perfect place to wear it.

SPLASH!
Alberta Ferretti lent me an amazing Greciancut chiffon evening dress to wear to Cecilia Peck's wedding. At the end of the night I was thrown into the swimming poolso they were so sweet and let me keep it. After a trip to the dry cleaner it looks good as new. Lucky me!-J.C.
